10 Years

Ten years ago a group of guys wrote some songs on a farm and brought them to the big city to record. At that time, Familiars lineup was Kevin Vansteenkiste on guitar and vocals, Jared MacIntyre on bass, Jon Clemens on drums, and Ken Lewis on Guitar. This video is a collection of snapshots from that time, writing, practicing and recording the EP.

If you’re interested in some of the background and what’s going on in this video, below are some additional facts and info.

  • The first part of the video is a tutorial that was made to teach the songs to Ken when he joined the band. Kevin introduces the song as "Tinder". It was later changed to Beyond Its Reach because during recording when we told Josh Korody the song's name he said “Like the app?” and we knew it needed to be changed.

  • The clips of Familiars jamming were taken at the Clemens family farm in Lambton Shores, Ontario.

  • As far as we know the bird went on to live a long and meaningful life. It would tell the story of how it was rescued by a group of big hairy men to all its grandchicks.

  • The EP was recorded live off the floor (minus the vocals) in one day at Candle Recording Studio with Josh Korody.

  • When we went to upload the EP to bandcamp we realized we didn’t have a cover for it. Kevin quickly whipped up an image using a picture he had taken of a bonfire at his family's farm.
